Seal Viewing

Seals are found in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, except the Walrus which is only found in the Northern Hemisphere.

The best place to see seals are of course on land and especially at or near their colonies. Unless there is a colony nearby, one cannot be guaranteed to see a particular seal species as they can range far and wide. The chances of spotting one or more at sea are quite remote.

The Seals or Pinnipeds are categorized into 3 main groups:
The "True" Seals consist of seals that have no distinct ears on the head.
The "Eared" Seals are the seals that have distinct ears on the head
The Walrus which is distinctive from the rest
(The Elephant Seal with it's trunk-like nose is not a separate group)
